FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY FACULTY

What is CASAS?

CASAS is a standardized assessment system.  This testing system has been adopted by the State of Washington to ensure that students’ essential skills for life and work are measured. Its name stands for Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System.

Why is CASAS important?

CASAS is important because it is the way the State is measuring the effectiveness of all ESL/ABE/GED programs. CASAS learning gains directly affect our program funding. Funding determines the size of our program.

What is my role when it comes to CASAS testing?

Your role is to help prepare students for this test. You can be an active participant of the CASAS process and use the information that this assessment tool can provide you. You can visit the CASAS website www.casas.org to view some sample questions or check the ESL/GED Technology webpage (Instructor Resources) link for more information about CASAS.  In addition, you need to be aware of the CASAS testing dates and encourage your students to attend. Students need to know the importance of taking this test in aiding our program to offer low cost classes to the community at large.

What is TOPS Pro?

TOPS Pro is a software program that our program uses to scan and score the answers to the CASAS tests. TOPS Pro software can provide several types of reports for teachers such as Competencies Performance per Student, Student Gains per class, etc .

What should I tell my students when they ask about their CASAS score?

At this time, students need to contact either the ESL Program Office and make an appointment with the ESL Program Advisor (Aura Rios Erickson) or the Assessment Assistant (Nina Grishinchuk).  Results are available two weeks after the test date.
