CASAS PROCESS

CASAS testing for ESL students starts with an oral interview. At the interview, the test administrator evaluates the student’s proficiency, literacy skills and previous educational background. Prospective students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency are given an appraisal. Those who demonstrate lack of understanding will take the ESL pre-test at the start of the quarter. At Shoreline Community College (SCC), all prospective students are interviewed and some are appraised during our program placement test.

At our college, most incoming students take their ESL pre-test during an orientation/registration session prior to the start of each quarter. The type of ESL pre-test is based on the appraisal test score or oral interview. All ESL pre-tests have a reading and listening component. ESL pre-tests vary on time depending on the level of difficulty of each test.  Students are usually given one minute per question. Students should be given at least 30 minutes and no more than one hour for the reading section of the test. The pre-test needs to be administered upon entry into the program and within the first 12 hours of instruction. (This is true for ESL and ABE program students)

At SCC, all incoming ABE/GED students attend a two day orientation. During the orientation, all students are appraisedABE appraisals have a math and reading sections. Students are given one minute per question. Students’ pre-test (or next test) is based on appraisal scores.

Post test for ESL or ABE students needs to be administered at the end of the quarter or if the student has persisted 45 hours of instruction or if the student is leaving the program. Post-test scores serve as pre-test for the following quarter. CASAS scores are valid for six months.  Faculty can use CASAS scores to assist them in understanding the competency level of each student.
